The Ruy Lopez is a chess opening that is named after the Spanish bishop Ruy López de Segura, who wrote one of the first books on chess in the 16th century. It is a popular opening that is often seen at all levels of chess, from casual games to grandmaster tournaments.

The Ruy Lopez is a flexible opening that can be used by players with a variety of playing styles. It is considered to be a solid opening that offers opportunities for both attack and defense, and it is often used as a way to control the center of the board and put pressure on the opponent's pieces.

To play the Ruy Lopez, White starts by moving their king's pawn two squares forward, to e4. Black typically responds by moving their king's pawn to e5, which leads to a symmetrical pawn structure with pawns on d4 and e5 for White, and d5 and e6 for Black.

White then typically plays Nf3, followed by d3 and Bd2, which develops their knights and bishops and supports the pawn on e4. Black typically responds with Nc6, followed by Bc5, which develops their knights and bishops and supports the pawn on e5. This sequence of moves is known as the "Spanish Four Knights" variation of the Ruy Lopez.

One of the key ideas behind the Ruy Lopez is to use the pawn on e4 as a wedge to control the center of the board and to create opportunities to attack the opponent's king. White often plays Bc4 at some point, which puts pressure on Black's d5 pawn and can lead to the exchange of the d5 pawn for the e4 pawn. This can create an open d-file, which can be used by White's rook to attack Black's king.

Another important idea in the Ruy Lopez is to try to prevent Black from gaining control of the d4 square, which would allow them to put pressure on White's pawn on e4. To do this, White often plays c3 at some point, which supports the pawn on d4 and makes it harder for Black to gain control of the d4 square.
