Accelerated Dragadorf

dragadorf.pngThe Accelerated Dragadorf is somehow a strange opening, which is a clone of Accelerated Sicilian Dragon opening. The name of the openning was created by Simon Williams in his new book : "The New Sicilian Dragon", 2009. It is a mix of Dragon and Najdorf. Let's see why. Look at the moves : 1/ e4 c5  2/ Nf3 d6  3/ d4 cxd4   4/ Nxd4 Nf6  5/ Nc3 g6  6/ Be3 a6 !?. So g6 and a6 are typicaly moves of Sicilian Accelerated Dragon and Sicilian Najdorf.  But together? So what does white think about it ? What does black want to play? The opening of  Najdorf or Dragon? The file of opening itself shows B70-93 - a wide range od classification by ChessBase. It this  maybe a reason of transposition which is very big? Our data shows that the first was the sequence of moves played by Perrot /FRA/ in 1954. After that Reshevsky in 1957. Nowadays this opening is played by Amonatov, Kudrin, Shabalov, Kuzubov etc.. In the Theory table this opening shows poor results but not easy to say if this is true because the Accelerated Dragadorf is only starting to play now and we need more evidence. This opening now growing so stay tuned.

Anglo-Slav Defence

anglo-slav.pngThe English Opening A11, Anglo-Slav Defence or somethimes called Carro-Kann System is characteristic by moves 1/ c4 c6. The first Black moves are typical for both Openings Slav and Carro-Kann. The ideas behind Blacks is same but in the area of English with first move on 1.c4. The Anglo-Slav motive is also present in Reti Opening, i.e.1/ Nf3 Nf6 2/ c4 c6. The Anglo-Slav continues on 1/ c4 c6 2/ Nf3 d5 3/ b3 Nf6 4/ g3 Bf5 5/ Bg2 e6 6/ Bg2 Nbd7. Take a look at the Opening Theory table how these games can develop. This opening is played from GMs to all levels.

Anti-Grundfeld

antigrunfeld.pngThe Anti-Grundfeld Defence D70, sometimes called Grundfeld Indian is based on tricky third move. The move order is : 1/ d4 Nf6  2/ c4 g6 3/ f3 !? This was played several times in the 1930's by Alekhine and till today it is still popular. White hopes to steer the game into the Saemish Variation of the King's Indian with e4 which is not going to make Grundfeld player very happy. The game continues 3/ ..d5 4/ cxd5  Nxd5  5/ e4 Ndb6  6/ Nc3 Bg7  7/ Be3 0-0. White has developed a nice center, but Bishop on f1 does not have a good square to develop. White prepares to castle qeeenside. Sometimes it ends with unclear position and chances for both sides. The defence looks interesting. Look to Theory tables what happens next.

Benoni Argentina Attack

Benoni Attack.pngThe Benoni Argentina Attack and defence is a strange opening because some moves are from the first look not logical compared to basic chess principles. But from second view there are some poisonous ideas. Who does not know the principles of Benoni game can easily lose in wide game. It is double-edged defence when either side can easely win/lose.. The chances are however equal. Not surprising who played this opening...e.g. Mikhail Tal who had agressive playing style and after him also Fisher and young Kasparov. Now it used also by Topalov. This opening is very useful in Correspondence chess, when players who like computer analysis as support have some problems because engines do not completelt understand what is happening in these positions.

Play 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 e6 4.Nc3 exd5 5.cxd5 d6 6.e4 g6 7.Nf3 Bg7 8.Be2 O-O 9.O-O a6 10.a4 Bg4 and see how other professional players played it in 639 games in total.

Blumenfeld Gambit

Blumenfeld Gambit.pngThe Blumenfeld Gambit - Idea is similar to Benoni, when b5 is considered as ''strange move'', when Black starts to maneoeuvre at Queen's side and irritates White with strange development ! Today the game is again fashionable. It seems as playing the Benko, but there are some differences. Main moves are : 1/ dxe5 fxe6 2/ Bg5 with some variations. Look to Theory table and games to see more...

Budapest Gambit

Budapest Gambit.pngThe Budapest Gambit also sometimes called Budapest Defence A51 is a courageous gambit. In the past, it was a favorite of Tartakower and Réti. The idea is to disconcentrate the opponent, who does not know what happened after some moves. It is a provocation simply to say. Natural move is 3.d4 x e5. After this move we have two possibilities for Black. First is 3. .. Nf6-e4 Fajarowicz Variation with 4. Qd5 or Qc2 or Nd2 or Nf3. Second way of Black is 3. ..Ng4 with following 4/ e4 or Nf3 or Bf4. The opening is more played at a club level, but sometimes also seen on haigher levels by Gulko, Rogers, Kurajica..

Caro-Kann Panov

Caro Kann Panov.pngThe Caro-Kann Panov - An Introduction to Caro-Kann Panov or Panov-Botvinnik Attacks are moves : 1/ e4 c6 2/ d4 d5 3/ exd5 cxd5 4/c4  it seems like Queen's Gambit but difference is that there is no black pawn on c7 and white on e2. Position can transpose to Nimzo-Indian Defence or Semi-Tarrasch or Grunfeld type. After  4/ ...Nf6 5/Nc3. Black had  typical continuation  e6, g6 or Nc6. In the first 5/ ..e6 6.Nf3 Be7 is 7/ c5 ! which leads to queenside pawn majority. Second position is 5/ ..g6 6/ cxd5 Bg7 7/ Qb3! Third position is after 5/ ...Nc6 6/Bg5 or Nf3. All types of games  are positional and both players prepare themselves to go to better positions in the endgame. The percentage of draws is howover high.

Chebanenko-Slav

Chebanenko.pngChebanenko Slav Defence /aka Chameleon/ is now very popular between players who want a flexibile position against 1.d4, or want desorienting White opponent if he knows only the main line games (e.g.1.d4)  . Reason of move 4. ..a6 of Black is wide ability of next moves while White still does not know, which variation Black wants to play.  It is about a transposition between variations while anything can happen when White does not await. English-Dutch Defence

Anglo-Dutch.pngThe English-Dutch Defence is a clone of English Opening, but very strange one. Sometimes the name is in many ECO classification "other". After typical English Opening set up : 1/ c4 e5 2/ Nc3  is  f5 second move of Black is shocking or perhap a joke for White. It is a minority Defence, but as you see in the Theory table and games no one can find the right way out. Report is made from games after 1960 and it has only 202 games, but it is still played nowadays perhaps not at the TOP level. This type of opeining is suitable for the club level where it's the right place for this experiment - half English and half Dutch /cat-dog/. You can see how players find the way from this curious situation.

English-Symmetrical

English-Symmetrical.pngThis English Opening - symmetrical is named after Englishman Howard Stauton. When Botvinnik started  playing this variation  in 30s and 40s it bacame quite respectful. In  the 60 s and 70s  this opening joined to the mainstream and  it is still played  till  today. Symmetrical  Variation  is very popular because it has rich possibilities from  countergambits  to positional  maneuvering.  See in Theory table development of White and Black. The games which follow depends to the nature of players. From sharp to positional games. You can see relatively too many draws.

French Defence Advance

French Advance.jpgFrench Defence : Advance Variation C02 is also called as Nimzowitsch Variation. In French it is the most ambitious option for White. White from the start of game gains space on kingside and is not afraid of Black's initiative. Black attacks d4 pawn and White defends it. White has statistically better results. French Winawer Keres Gambit

frenchwinawerkeres.pngThe French Opening, Winawer Variation : 1/ e4 e6  2/ d4 d5  3/  Nc3  Bb4  is well known opening  . The  bishop on b4  is often exchanged  with the knight on  c3.  The main  answer  to this is 4/ a3 , Qg4 , Bd2 /Keres Gambit/, exd5 and Nge2. In this report we are interested in move 4/ Bd2. White prevents the creation of a doubled pawn on c3. After our move on 4/ Bd2 this is sometimes called as the Fingerstip Variation. If the game continues with 4 ..dxe4 5/ Qg4 Qxd4 it is a Kunin Double Gambit. The Keres Gamit is at 5/ ..Nf6 6/ Qxg7  Rg8 7/ Qh6  Qxd4 ! 8/ 0-0-0 Bf8 ! /Bronsten's idea/. Our Theory table is full to continue your analysis. This Opening is played from GM's to all level. Typical is a sharp position when both opponents like to attack. The future of the correspondence chess are positions which today's engines do not understand.

Grunfeld Defence

Grunfeld.pngThe Grunfeld Defence or Grunfeld Indian Defence D80 is known by move order : 1/ d4  Nf6 2/ c4  g6 3/ Nc3  d5. Black establishes fianchetto with 2/ ..g6. It is bit different of Nimzo-Indian. The Idea of d5 is to protect from immediatelly e4, concede the center and then attack it. It was first played by Austrian player Ernst Grunfeld in 1922. It started to be popular in the 1950' and 60'. Now it is played by many players on TOP list. Just week ago /18.11.09/ Carlsen won as Black against Aronian. King Indian Defence Samisch

kidsamish.pngThe Kings' Indian Defence /KID/ is a very old opening.  The Sämisch Variation  E90 is played at : 1/ d4 Nf6  2/ c4  g6  3/  Nc3  Bg7  4/ e4  d6  5/ f3. Players playing Black knowing KID Samisch have nice advantage, because many players think about this game a ''defender case'' which is not. The order of moves are pretty known, but when Blacks attack on f-column it is nerves shaking for White. Who is an expert in KID is a dangerous player. White occupies the center with pawns in order to kingsize attack and take advantage over space, but kingsize attack is also in repertoire of Black! This is a reason why games are so positional and very sharp. Players all levels play this opening,

King's Indian Averbakh Variation

king indian.pngThe King' Indian Defence is old and well known defence. GM Tartakower humorously named it Indian when he read in journal about game of two Brahmans whose game started with 1/ d4 Nf6. Word King's refers that Black open fianchetto on the King's side. The line 1/ d4 Nf6  2/ c4 g6  3/ Nc3  Bg7  4/ e4  d6  5/ Be2 0-0  6/ Bg5 was succcessfuly used by Averbakh against Panno. After that it was adopted by several noted players with good results. Nowadays Bareev often plays it but also many others GMs. Blacks move 6. ..Nb8-d7, Na6, h6,c5 are played by many players. Look into the Theory table how many games were played and see the analysis yourself.

Modern Benoni - Bronstein Variation A70

ModernBenoni.pngThe Modern Benoni - Bronstein Variation A70 is a contemporary opening. It is built on imbalance from the start. Black has queenside pawn majority and White center pawn majority. Tal used this opening in the 1950s and 60s. Move order is : 1/ d4  Nf6 2/ c4  c5 3/ d5  e6 4/ Nc3  exd5 5/ cxd5  d6 6/ e4  g6 7 Nf3  a6 !? to stop a4. Many players play it as 8/ a4, but there are not good statistics of this move. Plan of Black is also exchange of Bg4 for a Knight on f3. Continuation of White can be 8/ Qe2 !?  h3 !? or a4. Both sides have equal chances...

Perenyi Attack

Perenyi.pngThe Perenyi Attack (B81) is one of the sharpest lines in the Sicilian Defence and starts with the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Be3 e6 7.g4 e5 8.Nf5. It is a clone of Schveveningen Keres attack when Black move e5 to provoke white because g4 pawn is hanging. White has sharp attack and black have not developed figures. It is a main idea of this attack.

Though black has an advantage in material, he is behind in development and under intense pressure.  Black's goal is simply stated but difficult to realize: Mount a defense and survive the middlegame; maintain material advantage into the endgame where it will prove decisive.

Opening Master starts to upload second level analysis of some selected Openings. First one is above mentioned Perenyi Attack, B81. These games are very sharp and Black can play it only when is experienced and have good nerves. Look to the games and you will understand why.

Petroff Defence

Petroff Defence.pngPetroff Defence /Russian/ is defence when resulting variations tend to lead to symmetrical and quit positions. Number of draw games is unusually high. When White s too agressive he can backfire his own variations. On top-levels players Black chooses this opening if he wants to draw against the strong opponent. Name of opening is by Alexander Petroff who popularized this opening  in  19th  century. Typical  type of GM who likes to play it is Anatoly  Karpov - positional player . Philidor's Defence

Philidor Defence.pngPhilidor's Defence C41 is a one of oldest defence. From today's point of view it is defensive openinig,  passive, but stabile . One may think this opening is not played anymore but here we can demonstrate 3.376 games from 2004-2009 years how it can be useful surprizing your opponent. From our experience as White it is not too easy to destroy this superdefensive  position. Old tricks are known and you must be very careful thinking "What to do next..." Pseudo King's Indian

pseudoindian.pngThis Opening is called Pseudo-King's Indian Opening or Neo Indian Opening. Typical moves are : 1/ d4  Nf6  2/ Nf3  g6. It is a complete disorder because Black wants to play Kings Indian, but the White's second move for King' Indian is 2/ c4 !! What does White want to play? It is a big question. Maybe London System, Torre Attack 3/ Bf4 ?, maybe Fianchetto Defence, Torre Attack 3/ Bg5 ? or King's Indian 3/ e3 Bg7 4/ Bd3 d6. These are many ways to continue. The file for analysis was relatively big with 29.474 games, with 31962 players on 12810 events. The odds for Black are good because Black is well oriented in King's Indian positions and plans. White must know very good what he wants with this move 2/ Nf3 , must have a plan and must realize a surprise with this move.  It is the Opening of the future, because main theory books do not yet refer about this interesting Opening. We could be the first to have a complete set of analysis. There are many possibilities to transpose to something else.

Queens Gambit : Chigorin Defence

Chigorin.pngQueen Gambit : Chigorin's Defence is named after Russian master of nineteenth century Mikhail Chigorin. It is a surprise weapon against Queen's Gambit. Position of Knight at c6 demonstrates willing for quick development and piece pressure on the center. At present times Chigorin Defence is performed quite often by Morozevich. GM Morozevich has also published a book on the Chigorin Defence -> Link <-  in which he gives both a theoretical and personal view on the opening. The book is called : Alexander Morozevich & Vladimir Barskij, /The Chigorin Defence According to Morozevich/, 2007/. The Chigorin's defence is an unusual one and the theory of this opening is not well developed yet as it is the case for more popular openings.

Reti-Barcza Opening

Reti-Barcza.pngThe Reti Opening A07 began to play in 1920s, when this hypomodern strategy 1/Nf3 d5 2/c4 or g3-named Barcza System started playing. White setup is not a direct aggression, so Black can choose from many ways how to defend. Reti Opening and Barcza System can easily  transpose and that is a reason why Barcza System was incorporated to the same A07 Opening. White has several choices : Early b4 with expansion on queenside, but Black controls the center, Finachettos of bishops etc. The principle is to hold great area of space from which one can realize his own moves everywhere. It can easily happen seeing strange positions which are reversed to other opening . White and Black must all the time think what can happen when they approach the endgame.

Play 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 or g3 and see how other professional players played it in 5,625 games in total.

Ruy Lopez Berlin Defence

Ruy Lopez Berlin Defence.pngBerlin Defence became popular at the end of 20th century thanks to match Kramnik-Kasparov. Black plays it when he wants to draw against the strong opponent. The principle is early exchange of Quenns and quick reaching of the endgame. The name of Opening is by Berlin Wall which once divided Berlin to East/West part of a town. The Opening is defensive, but Black can win too. Look to a Database and see how it can happen.

Ruy Lopez Breyer Variation

Ruy Lopez Breyer.pngRuy Lopez Breyer Variation starts from the most common position after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0  Be7 6.Re1 b5  7. Sb3 d6 8.c3  0-0  and typical manoeuvre  9. h3 Nb8.  Now, White has two possibilities 10. d3 /C94/ and  10. d4 /C95/ which we analyze. Move 10. d4 is more agressive. The idea of Black moves is re-developing the Knight from Nc6-b8-d7. The Black's position is now better to support and control the center and column for c pawn is now free for the moves. This manoeuvre gains some time for White to choose where he wants to play. Kingside, Queenside or Both. After this we can look to wide ranges of dynamic middle games from both sides. There are plenty of combinations but both sides must think about pawn structures and decision how to continue in the endgame. This is the reason why some players choose this opening as the Black. They are experienced in endgame and meny times win this game in endgame after exchange of figures. White must be careful and try to win this game sooner before it reaches the endgame.

Play 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 d6 8.c3 O-O 9.h3 Nb8 10.d4 and see how other professional players played it in 3,380 games in total.

Ruy Lopez Schlieman Variation

RLSchlieman.pngThe Ruy Lopez Schlieman Variation.  The Ruy Lopez Defence is named after Spanish priest with the same name. It is known more than 500 years and many players don't like to play it because the theory is about long variations. Less long are the variations without a6. The Ruy Lopez. Schlieman-Jaenisch Variation  is one of them. It is sharp opening gambit style. It's all about fighting for the center. This Opening is played in all levels still today. Look at the Opening report who played it and how. The CBV file is fully indexed.

Scandinavian-Schiller Defence

Scandinavian.pngScandinavian-Schiller Defence (B01) is a "poison" defence for some type of players. At first it is for players who like wild combinations and for players with great energy.  This type of opening for Black can make opponents nervous and they can play from its own concept. Strange position of Queen on d6 asks opponent what to do with it ? Black have some strange move maneuvres a6. Nothing usual is coming. So for White you must know what to play, because general principles are not visible. Opponent have plan to retain good positional game and win the endgame. This is a main plan from beginning.

Sicilian Anti-Sozin

Sicilian Anti-Sozin.pngThe Sicilian Defence has many mainstream variations. One of  them is  Sicilian : Sozin - Velimirovic Attack, but all depends what Black plays after 6th move. Sozin didn't play this move first in order 1/ e4  c5  2/ Nf3  d6  3/ d4  cxd4  4/ Nxf4  Nf6 5/ Nc3  Nc6  6/ Bc4  it is a basic move order of White. Sozin first analyzed the next plans of White and succesfully used them. But as many times happened some players did not like to play good analyzed plans of White. One day Paul Benko Hungarian master who lived in USA played 6. ..Qb6. This move is known from Najdorf variation but in other setup of figures. This variation has also name Anti-Sozin variation because White must change prepared plans and the game tranforms its situation  to another setup. We recomend to look at it in the Openings Table because many modern players and top level GMs e.g. Kasparov and Kramnik used it as strange invitation to players who often play Sozin-Velimirovic Attack. Look how it is done.

Play 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Bc4 Qb6 and see how other professional players played it in 1,639 games in total.

Sicilian Closed Variation

Budapest Gambit.pngThe Sicilian Defence, Closed variation B25 is played by White when players do not want to memorize hundred of variations of Najdorf, Sozin-Velimirovic, Scheveningen and other theoretically well known variations of Sicilian Defence. It is played with good feeling for positions and developing your figures by typical ways. It is a better play for White with stronger players, because they understand the situations better and have feeling for strategy and tactics. The opening is played at all levels. The principle is not to open the positions with Nf3 and d4, expansion on kingside and manoeuvering game with developing bishop to g2 square. After sequence of moves : 1/ e4  c5  2/ Nc3  Nc6  3/ g3  g6  4/ Bg2  Bg7  5/ d3  d6 6/ f4 or Be3 can lead to more directions. After 6/ f4 Black can play 6. .. e5 / Botvinnik Variation / or ..e6 / Black fights against f5 /. Sicilian Closed was a useful weapon of Spassky, but many other GMs liked to play it too.

Sicilian Paulsen-Taimanov

SicilianPaulsenTaimanov.pngThe Sicilian Paulsen-Taimanov opening report was to be used as White. The Taimanov Variation of the Sicilian Defence arises after the moves 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 e6 3 d4 cd4 4 Nd4 Nc6. It is a flexible game and often transposes to other Sicilian variations such as the Scheveningen.  There is a transposition to the Sveshnikov which goes 5 Nc3 Nf6 6 Ndb5 d6 7 Bf4 e5 8 Bg5 a6 9 Na3 b5. With this kind of games we come to old school manners /not about computers/. The old books combinations are still not understood by computers. That is the reasons to wide play this openings nowadays. It's not sharp to Black, but poison to White, to those who are not familiar with this Varriation.

Sicilian Sveshnikov

Sicilian Sveshnikov.pngThe Sicilian Sveshnikov/Lasker-Pelikan Variation B33 is nowadays one of the most popular opening in all levels. It is commonly often played on OTB as well as Correspondence chess. The first moves  are  typical  1/  e4  c5  2/  Nf3  Nc6  3/  d4  cxd4  4/  Nxd4  Nf6  5/  Nc3  e5.  Interesting is evaluation of  these positions. It is very dynamic process where square d5 is weakened but also very difficult for White to exploit this weakness. If Black takes greater risks he can be headed for  a win. The  6/  Ndb5 is often  continued  6/ ..  d6  7/  Bg5 /main line/  a6 8/ Na3 b5 ! /Cheliabinsk Variation/. Our Crossdroad is 9/ Nd5 or Bxf6. We examine 9/ Bxf6  gxf6  10/ Nd5  Bg7 /Novosibirsk  Variation/ or  f5  as principal move.  The activities of Black are difficult to compare to basic principles however one cannot say for sure if White is better prepared for the endgame. This position is wild but balanced ! Black often chooses this opening for that reason. It is hard to win but hard to loose for both White and Black. Look at the Opening Theory table and examine the games.

Sicilian-English Attack

Sicilian English Attack.pngThe Sicilian-English Attack opening was shown by Chandler, Short, Nunn in the 1980s. It became to be known as ''English Attack''. It is a awaiting and very positional game and offers Black to answer. Black determines what will be played. The are some options to choose from:
1/  e6 its most popular, but leads to Scheveningen Variation.
2/ e5  pure Najdorf style. So now Nf3 or Nb3 ?
Both variantions have some advantages, and there is always a counter play. Play 1 e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Be3 and see how other professional players played it in 6,480 games in total.

Sicilian-Nimzowitsch Variation

Sicilian Nimzo-Rubenstein.pngThe Sicilian Defence Nimzo-Rubinstein Variation or Nimzowitsch Variation is relative rare in Sicilian Defence but known as well. Some of the expressions of Andrew Martin are on the WEB. It looks similar to Alechin's Defence because Black after 1/ e4 c5 2/ Nf3 Nf6 provokes moving to e5 and after that Black Knight moves to d5. This is  crossroad  and leads to  next possibilities.  The positions can be  quite  positional  oriented and sharp. It depends of course on the players.  Who does not  know  the main answers to this can have big problems.

Smith-Morra Gambitsmithmorra.pngSmith-Morra Gabmit is a kind of Anti-Sicilian Opening. The GM's do not play it often because one offers 2 pawns which is too painful. On the other hand this opening have some reasonable features. White quickly may develop and reaches some typical positions which Black can have big problems. So Black must play very careful game and must know typical ways out from these problems. Who does not know this ways can only lose the game.
More on the theory can be found on wiki : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith-Morra_Gambit
