you are correct at the moment we offer PGN databases only for 2500 and 2300 which is the technical limit for ChessBase to migrate big data into very old format as PGN. In around 2 mil the databases conversion breaks down and PGN nor CBV cannot recover - no matter how advanced software/Windows/hardware we are using. And to add, we do have one of the strongest performance systems built needed for administering such huge data in speed and accuracy.

I understand the probleem. Maybe it would be possible to break the file into a number of parts, and that these parts are converted individually. Or is that impossible?

you have good ideas, just at the moment they are not technically possible. We are able to break the big 6 mil file into 6x1 mil files to create PGN but you have no program which could actually glue it together without breaking/crashing. We have tested it several times. The data is too large to work with and therefore the CBV is the only preferred option at the moment in terms of compression and accuracy. Also the size matters, the CBV file for OM Big file is around 600 MB, without compression just PGN the estimate is somewhere around 3 GB.
If you know some program which doesn't crash with such volumes of PGN and size let us know, we have no issue to create individual PGNs out of it.

Some good news. I think the latest software from Convekta will be able to open the new Chessbase files and convert them to Chess Assistent files.

A Question about the big database - Does the 5.7 million big database include the correspondence games ? If you added the correspondence games to the big database will you get 6.6 million games in total ? thanks Dave T

Hi Dave, the correspondence games are part of the big OM as we consider these games worth too. They are however extracted for correspondence special pack only.
